Metadata and structured data

Control page metadata and understand the structured data generated by Easol themes.

Easol automatically generates metadata for every page on a site. Creators can customise this metadata on supported page types to improve search engine optimisation and how pages appear when shared on social media.

Site pages

Creators can configure the following metadata for site pages:

  • SEO title
  • Meta description
  • Social sharing image
  • Canonical path
  • Custom <head> HTML
  • noindex

If no metadata is provided, Easol generates sensible defaults.

For example:

<meta property="og:title" content="Company | Page name">
<meta property="og:description">

After a creator configures page metadata:

<meta property="og:title" content="My Title">
<meta property="og:description" content="My description">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/social-image.jpg">

Metadata by page type

Different page types expose different metadata.

Page typeMetadata
Site pagesCreator-configurable title, description, social image, canonical path, custom head HTML, and noindex.
Product pagesGenerated from the product. Uses the SEO title (or product name), tagline, hero image, and canonical URL.
Blog postsTitle, description (falls back to tagline), hero image, Open Graph, Twitter tags, and canonical URL.
Blog overviewCanonical URL with site-level title and description.
Package bookingUses the site-level description.
HomepageUses the configured site page metadata when the homepage is a block page.

Structured data

In addition to standard metadata, themes can render structured data to help search engines better understand page content.

The Helsinki theme includes the following schemas by default.

LocationSchemaWhen rendered
HomepageOrganizationHomepage only (page.path == "/")
Product pagesEvent or LodgingBusinessAll product pages
Accordion blockFAQPageWhen FAQ items are present
Blog postsBlogPostingAll blog post pages
Blog overviewItemListBlog listing page

Themes can extend or replace these schemas where appropriate.

Developer considerations

When working with metadata:

  • Prefer creator-configurable metadata wherever possible.
  • Don't manually output canonical tags—Easol manages these automatically.
  • Include structured data that accurately represents the page content.
  • Keep structured data in sync with the visible page content to avoid search engine warnings.
